UK universities see boom in STEM applicants

Independent : More university students in the UK are enrolling in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, and fewer are choosing the humanities. Admissions officials worry that the rise in tuition rates this year is influencing students to choose subjects that could lead to more lucrative employment. Come September, tuition across the UK will increase to a maximum of £9000 ($14 000) per year. To make matters more difficult, about 100 000 more applicants than available places are expected.
