BBC: A doctoral student at Yale University is working on software to help a robot named Nico recognize itself in a mirror. Whereas earlier robots have been able to distinguish their own movements reflected in a mirror from those of others, Justin Hart’s robot is able to recognize its own arm based on appearance alone. The ultimate goal is for Nico to see its own reflection in a mirror as an image of itselfâmdash;the classic test of self-awareness. Such spatial reasoning is a necessary step toward developing artificial intelligence.
For the UNESCO section chief, “striking a balance between global coherence and respect for national ownership and cultural diversity is both essential and complex.”
