Science: Although numerous government agencies are experiencing budget cuts, NIST may do fairly well in 2013, writes Robert Service for Science. Yesterday a Senate appropriations subcommittee recommended raising NIST’s funding $75 million over the current 2012 budget to a total of $826 million, a roughly 10% increase. Today the Republican-controlled House Appropriations Committee proposed nearly identical numbers to its Democrat-led Senate counterpart, which would boost the agency’s overall budget by $79 million, to $830 million.
For the UNESCO section chief, “striking a balance between global coherence and respect for national ownership and cultural diversity is both essential and complex.”
