Space News: In an agreement signed 14 May, NASA is lending the Galaxy Evolution Explorer to Caltech. Launched in 2003, GALEX lost its funding in February due to budget cuts. Caltech plans to fund the $150 million space telescope with private funds from various institutions, including the Keck Institute for Space Studies, Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science, and Cornell University. “We’re thrilled that the mission will continue on its path of discovery,” said Kerry Erickson, the mission’s project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
For the UNESCO section chief, “striking a balance between global coherence and respect for national ownership and cultural diversity is both essential and complex.”
